Description

A Russian Bargraph-Nixie-tube shows similar to the good old times like a mercury thermometer, the room-temperature on a height-changing column; however with NixieTherm you have a wonderful red-orange glow. At the same time six RGB auto colour changing LEDs, which illuminates the scale from the button, give a never ending play of different colours.

That is NixieTherm
It is the eye-catcher par excellence – at your home, your office or as a very specially gift idea.

Oh, what are "Nixie-tubes"?
The word "Nixie" was formed from the words "Numeric Indicator eXerimental No. 1" and first introduced 1954 by Burroughs Corporation as a brand name for numeric displays.
Nixie tubes are used until the mid of the 70's as displays in measuring devices, calculators and the very first computers. The evolution of modern style display types like Numitron, Vacuum Fluorescent, Light Emitting Diodes and Liquid Crystal Displays, which have a very low supply voltage (battery power supply) eliminated these Nixie tubes from the market and they are not produced anymore.
In the former USSR Nixie tubes were produced as surplus in simply vast quantities until the beginning of the 90's – and from this sources is this tube. But even these supplies are now running short. And when they're gone, they're gone.
The tube is taken from "NOS", what means "New Old Stock", is never used before and spend their first twenty or more years forgotten in some Russian warehouse. The principle of the Nixie tubes is based on a cold cathode discharge and it is used today a million times e.g. in small neon bulbs in the illuminated mains power switch from a multiple outlet strip for example.

This "Bargraph-tube" in the NixieTherm is a special construction of such a neon bulb, it can produce a current depending length variable glow.

I was often asked: "What is the lifetime of a Nixie tube" and than I give a simple answer: "Have a look at your illuminated power switch of the multiple outlet strip. How many years does this small neon bulb light without any problems?"

Features

  • Only analogue technique is used.
The electronic circuity runs without any processor or other digital parts. So it is easy to "modd" the electronic design.
  • Power supply via USB port.
Power consumption is as less as NixieTherm can powered up from a simple USB port. No driver needs to be installed. Nixietherm Mk II only "catches" the supplied voltage. As an alternative, NixieTherm can also be powered from a standard wall mart USB charger which supplies the USB minimum power of 5V @ 500mA required.
  • The electronic kit:
You get a complete electronic and mechanic kit – and complete means complete:
    • All electronic parts + PCB with silkscreen
    • Tested IN-13 Nixie-Bargraph-Tube
    • All mechanical enclosure parts
    • On request: USB power supplies

  • What you'll need:
    • Around 2 hours of your evening time with no hurry
    • A clear, well-lit area in which to work
    • Soldering station and fine electronic solder
    • Multimeter to check the generated voltages
    • Electronic tools
    • A loupe may be helpful
    • TX8/10 (Torx) and PH1 screwdriver
    • Download of the manual
    • Enjoyment of your work of course
    • And last but not least a simple USB port on your PC or an USB charger to power up NixieTherm.
